Level 4 — learning characteristics and prepositions

In level 4 we teach:

  • the characteristics of objects (shape, color, state)
  • the parts of objects
  • categories
  • opposites (big/small, long/short, etc.)

Since the child now knows many actions, objects and characteristics, we can start asking harder questions such as: "what do you brush your teeth with?", "what do you sleep in?", "where can you jump?", "name some animals", "what do you cut with?", "what can you cut?".

In Observation niv 4, the child has to watch for longer and retain several actions.

Object, shape, color (OFC)

In the series Répondre aux questions C'est Quoi / quelle Couleur / quelle Forme ?, the child learns to answer 3 different questions about an object: "what is it?", "what shape is it?", "what color is it?". There are 11 different steps:

  1. QS — The simple questions ("what color is it?", "what shape is it?") without an object: you just see a color or a shape (in black). This step tests whether the child knows the shapes and colors used in the series; targets that are not mastered can be taught in the next step.
  2. W- — The object, shape or color is named, then the child has to point and name it. After teaching the targets with the W-, we redo the QS to check. This step is absolutely necessary because some targets ("speaker", "sign"…) must be taught before moving on.
  3. AI- — The child has to find the object, shape or color shown in the first panel. Very important: many children had learned to name the shape of a specific object by heart (ball = round, table = rectangular) without being able to visually identify the shape of a new object! We test that here, notably with speakers, tables and bags of all shapes and colors.
  4. LR-_GF1 — The child has to find the red rectangular lego; only one word is spoken: "rectangular" (instead of rectangle — the first time in this series). The choices contain only legos, all red, in different shapes: a single factor (F1), guided (G).
  5. LR-_F1 — We say "red rectangular lego"; the choices: only legos, all red. The child only pays attention to the shape. As in all our exercises, there are LR-Ofc, LR-Foc and LR-Cof of the same targets.
  6. LR-_GF2 — Only two words are spoken: "rectangular lego". The choices: two different objects, two different shapes, all the same color — two factors (F2), guided.
  7. LR-_F2 — We say "red rectangular lego" with the same choices as in 6: two factors.
  8. Q-_G — The questions are asked with guidance: if the question is about the color, there are only colors among the choices.
  9. Q-_D — The choices show all the dimensions (color, shape, object): the child picks the right answer on their own.
  10. Q-_X — The questions without prompts: a single panel, no choices.
  11. Q-_XN — The same questions about objects the child has never seen in the series.

The parts of objects

In Parties d'objets, we teach the parts of a few objects. This series was created for a child who had trouble understanding that a part of an object has a different name from the object as a whole — he said "airplane" when shown the wing of the airplane. We created videos for the targets: pedal, keyboard, seed, (toilet) seat, shoelace, handle, roof, wing, sleeve, sail, screen. First come the W-, then the LR- and finally the Q-. See also wnlpartieitem.

Crossed questions

In a very large series, the child learns to answer the questions: "who is it?", "what is she doing?", "where is she?", "what is she [action]-ing her [object] with?". The questions are first guided as in the meiactions series, but not all the steps are included.

Prepositions

In Prépositions, the child learns a few prepositions. For now these are: in, on, next to, in front of, behind. See also wnl préposition and Avec versus Sans.

WNL level 4

In wnlniv4, there are W- exercises with prepositions, characteristics, opposites, etc., and the sentences are much longer. In addition, there are more complex types of conversations that children encounter in class, for example:

Teacher: "Who knows what this is?" — pupil A: "a circle!" — pupil B: "a hoop!" — Teacher: "B is right, it's a hoop."

All these structures are mixed so that the child cannot know which target will be asked for after the first panel.

Sequences

  • wnlsequencesbase — the child has to choose which video will follow the first video. Example: you see a person giving their dog a bath, then you see the person drying their dog (correct answer), feeding their dog, putting the leash on, making their dog jump.
  • wnlsequencebonnereaction — example: a person is playing cards and then goes to the bathroom; in the meantime, someone takes away their chair. When they come back, 4 different reactions: having a meltdown, sitting on the floor, asking "where is my chair?", suggesting going to play soccer.
  • wnlsequencesson — example: you hear the doorbell, then you see one person starting to read, one opening the microwave, one flushing the toilet and one opening the door (the correct choice).
