Watch 'n Learn

Watch 'n Learn is a language assessment and learning program designed for children with a language delay and/or an autism spectrum disorder.

The goal is to teach children the skills they need to be able to learn language independently (without one-on-one teaching), such as:

  • observing and recognizing the objects and people in their environment
  • listening to and understanding what people are talking about
  • communicating by answering questions

The program consists of five levels.

NB: the series shown in a dark color are the very important series — do not skip them.

The main goal

The main goal is to teach children with autism and/or a delay in language development to learn new words from and in their natural environment, the way typically developing children do. That way, they will no longer need one-on-one teaching to learn every new word and every new concept.

When a typically developing child hears a new word, they:

  • look at and follow the item being talked about
  • repeat the new word they hear (in their head)
  • match it with the other objects that share the same name

Our aim with Watch 'n Learn is to teach children exactly these skills. In particular, we want the child to be able to watch a video of a short conversation in which a word the child does not know is used, then touch the object that was talked about, and then name that object.

We have noticed that this is very difficult for the children we work with:

  • they do not watch the videos long enough and do not follow the objects being talked about
  • they do not repeat the target word, that is, the word they need to remember in order to name the object afterwards
  • they do not know how to do (non-)identical matching of the objects and actions shown in the video

As a result, they cannot learn new words from their environment!

To teach them the skills they need to watch the video, repeat the word and match the object being talked about, we developed Level 1 of Watch 'n Learn.
